Sam Smith had a huge night at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, picking up four awards, three of them in major categories: best new artist, song of the year and record of the year for his Tom Petty-echoing smash hit “Stay With Me.”

the Best New Artist award - one of his three top wins
Sam
Smith wins Best Song of the Year for “Stay With Me.” It’s the third award the
singer has won. He beat out Kevin Kadish & Meghan Trainor for “All About
That Bass,” Sia Furler & Jesse Shatkin for “Chandelier,” Max Martin,
Shellback & Taylor Swift for “Shake It Off,” Andrew Hozier-Byrne for “Take
Me To Church.”
Pharrell Williams, Beyonce and Rosanne Cash, daughter of country legend Johnny, won three awards each.
Beck
won two, including best album. Other British winners included Clean Bandit with
Jess Glynne and Aphex Twin.
Madonna,
Katy Perry, Rihanna, Kanye West and Sir Paul McCartney were among those
performing at the Los Angeles ceremony.
But the night belonged to Sam Smith, who has cemented his place as one of pop's biggest stars just nine months after the release of his debut album In the Lonely Hour.
